In the final day of action at the Quincy Tournament, the Maryville volleyball team lost a closely contested match to Columbus State in four and lost to host Quincy 25-17, 25-22, 25-23 to end the tournament. Freshman
Allison Lakin was named to the All-Tournament team after posting 37 kills and 33 digs over the four matches.

After winning set one, the Saints fell to Columbus State in four 27-25, 23-25, 10-25, 23-25. The Saints were down two set points at 24-22 but Lakin had a kill to spark a 3-0 run. The set was tied at 25-25 until Lakin pounded down a kill, and
Cassidy Arndt and
Zoe Zeiter had a block to win the set 27-25. Set two saw the teams tied at 20-all and trade points until 23-23. CSU took the set with two straight points. Columbus State had its best hitting percentage in set three while the Saints had their lowest as CSU eased to win set three. The Saints trailed most of set four and were down 24-20 before a kill by
Ashley Selman. Lakin and
Katie Verseman teamed for a block, and a Lakin kill drew the Saints to 24-23 and forced a CSU timeout. However, the Cougars scored the next point to close the match.

Lakin paced the attack with 15 kills, while Arndt added nine kills and a team-high six blocks.
Kayla Buxton dished out 21 assists, and
Makayla Campbell led the defense with 10 digs.

Versus Quincy, the host Hawks took set one as the Saints could not get their offense untracked. Maryville hit -.033. The Saints bounced back in set two. Quincy led 10-8 before the Saints tallied four straight points. Selman started the run with a kill, and Lakin closed out the burst for a 12-10 Maryville lead. The Saints went back ahead 16-15 on a
Kara Wright kill, but the Hawks used a 7-0 run to jump back ahead. Maryville answered with five consecutive points, including four kills, to trim the deficit to 22-20. A Selman kill pulled the Saints to 23-22 but the Hawks scored two straight to win it. Maryville trailed 14-7 in the third set before roaring back into it with five unanswered points capped by a Wright service ace. The Hawks got to match point but back-to-back kills by Selman and Lakin kept the match going until the Hawks finally converted on their third chance.

Selman led the way with 11 kills, while Lakin posted a team-best 17 digs.
Michelle Escue had a strong service outing with four aces.

The Saints slip to 1-7 on the year but host their first match of the season Friday, Sept. 16, when Saint Joseph's visits for a 7 p.m. match.
