Volleyball Edged Late in Five-Setter vs Indianapolis

The Maryville volleyball team was looking to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play with two straight wins but visiting Indianapolis edged the Saints in a five-set thriller. The Greyhounds rallied for a 25-12, 20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-13 decision in Moloney Arena.

UIndy hit .474 to take set one before the Saints answered with a .353 hitting percentage to tie the match. Maryville had one of its best offensive sets in the third with a .640 mark. The Greyhounds posted their highest offensive mark of the match with a .481 that forced a decisive fifth set.

In the finale, UIndy jumped to a 3-0 lead before the Saints finally got on the board. After a Greyhounds hitting error pulled Maryville to 3-2, the teams traded points. UIndy scored four straight points until an Ashley Selman kill ended the run. Still down 9-4, Allison Lakin pounded down a kill. After an error by the Greyhounds, Katie Verseman tipped in a kill to pull the Saints to 9-7. Maryville tallied two straight on a UIndy service error, and a block by Kara Wright and Lakin. The Saints finally tied the set after a kill by Cassidy Arndt, and a block by Selman and Zoe Zeiter. The Greyhounds retook the lead but Arndt's kill again forged a deadlock. However, UIndy scored the final two points to narrowly edge the Saints.

Zeiter hit .600 in the match and finished with 13 kills to lead the Saints attack. Lakin added 11 kills, while Selman finished with 10 kills and four blocks. Verseman also had 10 kills, while Arndt added eight kills and four blocks. Michelle Escue recorded 29 assists, and Kayla Buxton finished with 23 assists. Maggie Murphy topped Maryville with 14 digs. Kacee Salyers led the Greyhounds (3-7, 101 GLVC) with 22 kills, and setter Remi Bowman finished with 55 assists.

The Saints are now 2-8, 1-1 GLVC. Maryville takes to the road as it plays at Trevecca Nazarene Tuesday, Sept. 20, in a nonconference tilt. The Saints return to GLVC play Friday at Wisconsin-Parkside.
