Volleyball Battles in Set Three But Tumbles to Trevecca Nazarene

The Maryville volleyball team traveled to Nashville, Tenn., for a non-conference match Tuesday at Trevecca Nazarene but fell to the Trojans in three sets 25-14, 25-12, 25-21. The Saints posted their best hitting percentage of the match in the third set but could not prolong the contest.

The Saints took a 5-4 lead on a kill by Ashley Selman but the Trojans scored four straight and grabbed the lead. Katie Verseman put down a kill that pulled the Saints to 12-9 but TNU scored five straight to pull away. In set two, the Trojans jumped to an early lead that the Saints were unable to overcome. TNU led by double-digits and claimed a 2-0 edge in sets.

Kara Wright started set three with a kill, and Selman and Cassidy Arndt combined on a block for a 2-0 lead. After TNU scored, Selman and Verseman had back-to-back kills for a 4-1 lead. Still leading by three points, the Saints tallied four of the next five points for a 9-4 advantage. The teams scored a point each at 10-5 but the Trojans tallied four consecutive points to trim the Maryville margin to one. TNU tied the set at 11-all but Verseman answered with another kill. The teams traded points and neither led by more than one point until the set reached 21-21. However, the Trojans had four consecutive kills and closed out the match.

Selman topped the Saints with nine kills and three blocks. She finished the match at a .421 hitting percentage. Allison Lakin and Zoe Zeiter both added five kills. Makayla Campbell recorded with a match-high 17 digs. Katelyn Atkinson led three Trojans (6-6) in double figures with 14 kills.

The Saints drop to 2-9 on the year. Maryville is back to Great Lakes Valley Conference play as it heads to Wisconsin-Parkside Friday, Sept. 23.
