The Maryville volleyball team took set one in a Great Lakes Valley Conference road tilt at Wisconsin-Parkside but was unable to carry over the momentum as the Rangers rallied for a 3-1 win (24-26, 25-20, 25-7, 25-14).
Â
The Rangers led set one 8-2 before a kill by
Zoe Zeiter sparked a 4-0 run.
Kara Wright's kill pulled the Saints to 8-6. Maryville found itself trailing 16-11 but forged a tie with five straight points capped by a block by Wright and
Allison Lakin. Later,
Cassidy Arndt tied the set at 19-19, and a UWP error gave the Saints their first lead at 20-19. Â Maryville reached set point at 24-22 but the Rangers saved two straight. Finally, the Saints took advantage of two UWP errors to win the set 26-24.
Â
Down in set two 3-1, the Saints reeled off five unanswered points to jump ahead 6-3. Maryville still held a lead at 11-10 before UWP finally tied the set. The score was still deadlocked at 20-20 until the Rangers tallied the final five points to even the sets at 1-1.
Â
The Saints offense struggled in set three while the Rangers posted their best hitting percentage of the night as UWP went up 2-1. In the final set, the Saints got a kill from
Katie Verseman, and she teamed with Wright on a block to pull Maryville to 10-9. However, the Saints attack could not match the Rangers' offense as UWP slowly edged away to finish the match.
Â
Lakin led the Saints with nine kills, while
Ashley Selman added seven kills.
Kayla Buxton had 15 assists, and
Makayla Campbell posted a team-high 13 digs. Three Rangers had double-digit kills as UWP improved to 3-9 overall, 2-1 in the GLVC. The Saints slip to 2-10 overall, 1-2 in the league. Maryville closes out its trip Saturday with a match at Lewis.
