Saints Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at No. 15 Lewis

The Maryville volleyball Saints were looking to topple No. 15 Lewis but the Flyers won their fifth straight match with a 3-1 victory (25-13, 25-16, 25-27, 25-13). The Saints won set three to extend the match but Lewis hit .375 overall to key the win over the Saints.

The Flyers soared to a 7-1 start in the opening set. The Saints got as close as 15-11 when they scored three of four points. After a Kara Wright kill, the Saints posted a triple block featuring Ashley Selman, Zoe Zeiter and Cassidy Arndt. The Saints were unable to get any closer as the Flyers won the set. Maryville trailed 3-1 in the second set and reeled off four straight points to grab the lead. Zeiter had a kill, and a Lewis error tied the set at 3-all. After another Flyers' error, Selman recorded the kill for a 5-3 Saints lead. Lewis tied the set twice but another kill by Wright pushed the Saints ahead 8-7. The Flyers scored four of the next five points and eventually took a 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Maryville was down 6-5 until reeling off five consecutive points. After a Lewis error, Allison Lakin had a kill to put the Saints up. Selman followed with back-to-back kills, and a Lewis miscue handed the Saints a 10-6 edge. Lewis eventually tied the set at 12-12. The set remained close and was tied at 22-all through 25-25. The Saints finally broke through with consecutive blocks to take the set. Selman and Katie Verseman had the first to bring Maryville to set point, and Verseman followed with a solo rejection for a 27-25 win. The Saints hit .300 in the set, their best mark of the match.

The Saints were trailing 10-5 before going on a 4-0 run. Wright sandwiched kills around one from Lakin, and a Lewis error pulled the Saints to 10-9. The Flyers scored three straight and later tacked on a 5-0 burst to close out the match.

Selman led the Saints with 11 kills, while Lakin added 10 kills. Makayla Campbell had 11 digs, and Michelle Escue chipped in 16 assists and 10 digs. The Saints drop to 2-11 overall, 1-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Lewis is now 9-3 overall, 4-0 in the GLVC.

The Saints return home Friday, Sept. 30, when they host Missouri S&T for a 7 p.m. match at Moloney Arena.
