Saints come up short 3-1 to USI

Evansville, IN – The Maryville Soccer team dropped its third straight match as they fell to the University of Southern Indiana 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field in Evansville.

The Screaming Eagles broke into the scoring column first as Carlie Scales scored from the top of the box in the 5th minute to take the early 1-0 lead. The Saints started to put pressure on the Southern Indiana defense and it paid off as Allison Verville took advantage of a Screaming Eagle penalty in the box and drilled the penalty shot into the back of net to knot things up at 1-1 in the 27th minute.

Southern Indiana (4-1-0, 1-1 GLVC) regained the lead in the 42nd minute as Ryley Hancock scored from just inside the 18-yard box to give the Screaming Eagles a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime. The Screaming Eagles added an insurance goal in the 90th minute as Gabriella Korte hit a shot from the left wing to seal the victory.

Verville and Ashley Pouge each had three shots on the day as the Saints out-shot Southern Indiana 15-12 with seven of those being on goal.

Maryville (1-3-0, 0-2 GLVC) returns home on Friday, September 16 as the Saints will take on McKendree University in a 5 p.m. start.
