St. Louis – The Maryville men's soccer team gave up early goals in both the first and second half as Rockhurst defeated the Saints 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Maryville Field.
The Hawks lived up to their #3 ranking in the latest Division II poll as they came out and controlled the tempo early in the game. That tempo paid off as Adam Michel scored in the 11th minute of action to give Rockhurst a 1-0 advantage. Maryville did have opportunities in the latter portion of the half as Erik Shafer just missed a header right in front of the goal and
Sander Heieren sent a shot just over the top of the net.
Rockhurst (7-0-1, 5-0-1 GLVC) scored an insurance goal in the 53rd minute as Andrew Patke lifted a shot from 17-yards out to give the Hawks the 2-0 advantage. Rockhurst outshot the Saints 17-10 with
Helmut Florencia and
Joergen Pettersen each having three shots on the afternoon.
Maryville (4-4-0, 1-4-0 GLVC) continues play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as they travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on Drury on Friday, Sept. 30. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
