Springfield, Mo. – The Maryville Saints men's soccer team got an early goal by
Helmut Florencia and the game-winning goal early in the second half to claim a 2-1 victory over Drury on the road Friday evening.
Florencia put the Saints on the scoreboard with a shot from 25-yards that just sailed over the Drury goalkeeper's hands to take an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of the match. The goal was Florencia's fourth of the season. Maryville controlled the tempo throughout the first half and outshot the Panthers 4-3.
Maryville continued to control play in the early stages of the second half as
Kevin Doherty scored his second goal of the year off a pass from
Sander Heieren to give the Saints a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute. Drury (7-2-0, 5-2-0 GLVC) put themselves on the scoreboard with a goal by Charles Guelly in the 84th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Saints were able to hold on for the road victory.
Maryville (5-4-0, 2-4-0 GLVC) returns to the pitch this Sunday, Oct. 2, as the Saints head to Rolla to take on Missouri S&T. The game is set for a 2:30 p.m. start.
