St. Louis – The Maryville Saints women's soccer team battled back from a one-goal deficit midway through the second half, but fell to cross-town rival Lindenwood 2-1 on Sunday evening at Maryville Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Lions struck first as Becky Roberts found the net from seven yards out on the left side of the box to take a 1-0 lead early in the half. The Saints continued to attack the Lions defense and it paid off as
Casey Gonzales drilled a strike from 20 yards out on the left side to knot things up at 1-1 in the 65
th minute.

Lindenwood (2-0-0) broke through in the 86
th minute as Kat Roe took advantage of a Saints yellow card in the 18-yard box and put her penalty shot just past a diving
Ali Riddle to give the Lions the 2-1 lead. Maryville had a chances in the final two minutes of action, but could not find the back of the net.

Maryville (1-1-0) opens Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday, September 9, on the road in Louisville, KY against Bellarmine in a 4 p.m.(ET).
