Helgi Jonsson scored in the early moments of the match and added an assist later in the contest to lead the Maryville University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over McKendree University at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill., Sunday afternoon. The win guarantees the Saints a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament for the second consecutive season.
What Happened – Jonsson opened the scoring for the Saints in the second minute of the match as he took a cross from
Ricardo Andrade and headed it into the back of the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Freshman
JD Sohn scored his sixth goal of the year in the 51st minute to extend the Maryville lead to 2-0.
Pontus Gitselov added an insurance goal in the 68th minute off a pass from Jonsson to give the Saints a 3-0 advantage.
Inside the Numbers – Jonsson finished the weekend with two goals and a pair of assists while Sohn chipped in with a pair of goals in the last two games.
Christian Kjaersgaard earned his eighth shutout of the year and his 20th career clean sheet.
How They Stand – Maryville improves to 11-2-2 overall and 9-2-2 in league play. The Bearcats fall to 2-13-0 overall and 0-13-0 in the GLVC.
