Mariah Loya scored the only goal of the match in the second half to give the Maryville University women's soccer team a 1-0 win over McKendree University Sunday afternoon at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill. With the victory, the Saints earned their first berth into the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.
What Happened – After a scoreless first half which saw the Bearcats outshoot Maryville 11-2, Loya scored the game winner in the 60th minute as she put a header off an
Ashley Pogue throw-in into the upper right corner of the goal to give Maryville a 1-0 advantage. The Saints defense held strong from that point in only allowing the Bearcats four shots over the last 30 minutes.
Inside the Numbers – The goal for Loya was her second of the year while Pogue added her third helper of the season.
Alison Riddle knocked away nine shots to earn her fifth clean sheet on the campaign.
How They Stand – Maryville improves to 8-4-3 overall and 7-3-3 in league play, which is the best league record that the Saints have had since joining the GLVC. The Bearcats fall to 11-2-3 overall and 8-2-3 in the GLVC.
Up Next – Maryville completes the regular season Wednesday, Oct. 25, as the University of Indianapolis comes to Maryville Field. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
