Summary
Kayla Steward poured in a career-high 21 points but the Maryville women's basketball team dropped its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at William Jewell 63-52. Steward scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to try and rally the Saints.
What Happened
Trailing 4-0, the Saints roared ahead with a 9-0 run. Steward sparked the burst with a layup, and Maya Solomon tied the game. After an Erin Lenahan layup, Mary Barton sank a 3-pointer for a 9-4 Maryville edge. In the second quarter, the Saints led by as many as nine points after a Lenahan free throw and took a 23-17 advantage into the break.
The Cardinals used a strong third quarter and rallied for a 45-35 lead heading to the final 10 minutes. Steward scored the first seven points in the fourth to draw the Saints to 47-42 at the 7:39 mark. Barton rained in a triple to cut the WJC lead down to 51-45. Steward converted two free throws as Maryville pulled to 56-50 but could not get any closer than six points in the final minute.
