Hawks Use Big Second Half to Prevail Over Saints Lacrosse

The Maryville men's lacrosse team battled Rockhurst to a draw in the first half but the Hawks used a big second half to prevail over the Saints 12-4 on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Maryville Field. The teams were tied 4-4 at halftime but the Hawks scored twice in the third quarter and did not surrender a goal to the Saints in the second half.

The Hawks scored just over one minute into the game but Brenden Symons equalized for the Saints at the 9:30 mark. Rockhurst tallied twice in the first quarter to take a 3-1 lead. Justin Amling fed Jacob Campbell for Maryville's second score 71 seconds into the quarter, and Symons tied the game at 3-3 at the 9:02 mark. Rockhurst took a 4-3 lead but Symons completed his hat trick with a goal with 3:32 left prior to halftime.

The defenses for both teams did not allow a score for nearly four minutes until Rockhurst found the back of the net twice in under a minute for a 6-4 edge with 10:22 left in the third. The Saints enjoyed a man-up advantage for 60 seconds but were unable to trim their deficit. The Hawks scored twice in the first five minutes of the final period and eased to the win and improved to 9-3 overall, 5-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

William DeVinney was strong in the nets for the Saints and posted a season-high 19 saves. The Saints (0-9 overall, 0-6 RMAC) host their final home game of the season Friday, April 7, when Adams State comes to town for a 1 p.m. contest at Maryville Field.
