Box Score Pueblo, Colo. -Â The Maryville men's lacrosse team battled Colorado State-Pueblo down to the waning moments but the ThunderWolves held on for a 9-7 win over the Saints Thursday afternoon in Pueblo, Colo. The two-goal contest was the closest of the season for Maryville.
The home squad scored the first three goals of the game before Jacob Campbell fired in his seventh goal of the season to get the Saints on the scoreboard. The ThunderWolves extended their lead to 4-1 as the Saints tied their mark for fewest goals allowed in the first half.
The Saints came out with a rush in the third quarter as Richard Cato Jr., and Tristan Snellgrove scored consecutive goals for Maryville to trim the CSU-Pueblo lead down to 4-3. Still trailing 5-3, the Saints forged a tie in the second half. Keegan Pierce scored at the 6:16 mark, and Campbell tallied his second of the game just 19 seconds after for a 5-5 tie. The ThunderWolves retook the lead at 7-5 until Brenden Symons found the back of the net with 54 ticks left in the third to draw the Saints to 7-6.
Neither team scored for nearly seven minutes before the ThunderWolves stretched their margin back to 9-6. Campbell potted his third goal of the game for a hat trick as the Saints closed to 9-7 with 4:48 remaining. Maryville had two scoring chances in the final minute but CSU-Pueblo kept the Saints at bay.
Campbell enjoyed a standout day with three goals and an assist to pace the Maryville attack. William DeVinney came up with 11 saves on the day. The Saints are 0-11 overall, 0-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Six different ThunderWolves scored as Colorado State-Pueblo improved to 5-4 overall, 3-4 in the RMAC. Austin Myers won 11 of 19 face-offs on the day, and the Saints picked up 24 ground balls.
Maryville is next in action Saturday as it takes on Westminster (Utah) College in a game that will be played at Colorado College.
