Kansas City, Mo. -Â Despite a school-record four goals from Jacob Campbell, the Maryville men's lacrosse team lost its final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game in a 17-8 decision at Rockhurst Saturday in Kansas City. Campbell's efforts marked the first time a Saint has scored four times in a contest.
The Hawks grabbed the early lead until Tristan Snellgrove scored on a man-up opportunity off a Campbell assist as the Saints broke through at the 13:30 mark of the second quarter. Just 63 seconds later, Campbell tallied his first goal of the game. Snellgrove make it a 3-0 run for the Saints with 11:04 to play in the half as Maryville charged to within 5-3. Rockhurst answered with three straight until Campbell scored another goal for the Saints. The Hawks settled for a 9-4 edge at halftime.
Zach Steltzer pulled the Saints back to 9-5 less than three minutes into the third quarter. Rockhurst scored its first goal after the break but Steltzer found the back of the net again to trim the deficit to 10-6. However, the Hawks took control of the game with five unanswered goals. Campbell completed his hat trick with 12 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. With 3:06 remaining, Campbell fired in his fourth goal of the game to close out the scoring.
Campbell finished with a record five points in the game on four goals and one assist for the Saints. Snellgrove and Steltzer both finished with two goals apiece. William DeVinney came up with nine saves on the day. Austin Myers picked up eight ground balls, while Mathieu Jung accounted for four more.
Maryville is 0-13 on the season and 0-10 in the RMAC. Luke VanOverbeke led Rockhurst with five goals and one assist as it improves to 12-4 overall, 7-3 in the conference. The Saints are back in action Tuesday, April 25, when they play at Lindenwood-Belleville in a 6 p.m. game.
