St. Louis – The Maryville University women's soccer team used a rock-solid defense and a late goal in the 84
th minute to upset No.15 Quincy University 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Maryville Field. This is the first time in school history that the Saints have defeated a nationally ranked opponent.
What Happened – After the two teams played in a scoreless battle for over 83 minutes,
Alex Johnson took a pass from
Mariah Loya on a breakaway and pushed a shot past the Hawks diving goalkeeper that found the left corner of the goal to put the Saints ahead 1-0. The Saints defense took control of the match and did not allow the Hawks a shot in the last six minutes of the game.
Inside the Numbers – This is the second game-winning goal for Johnson this season.
Alison Riddle knocked away five shots on the afternoon and raised her record to 4-2-1.
How they stand – Maryville improves to 5-2-1 and 4-1-1 in the Great Lake Valley Conference while the Hawks fall to 6-1-0 and 4-1-0 in the GLVC.
Up Next – Maryville heads to Kirksville, Mo., Friday, Sept. 29, to take on Truman State. The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
