Kirksville, Mo. – The Maryville University women's soccer team needed some late-game heroics as the Saints defeated Truman State 1-0 Friday afternoon at Bulldog Soccer Park in Kirksville, Mo. The win gives the Saints their best start in conference play since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
What Happened – After a hard-fought scoreless first half between two of the top scoring teams in the GLVC, the Saints broke through in the 76th minute.
Caite Huesgen took a pass from
Ashley Pogue and buried it from the left wing to give Maryville a 1-0 advantage. The Bulldogs had few chances in the latter stages of the contest, but Maryville's defense held on to earn their second consecutive shutout.
Inside the Numbers – The Bulldogs outshot Maryville 13-6 with
Alison Riddle kicking away seven shots to earn her third shutout of the year. Huesgen's goal was her team-high third game-winning goal of the season.
How They Stand – Maryville improves to 6-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the GLVC while the Bulldogs fall to 4-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the GLVC. This is the Saints' best start to a season since the 2006 team started with a 7-1-1 mark.
Up Next – Maryville continues its brief two-game road trip Sunday, Oct. 1, as the Saints travel to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell. The match is set to begin at noon.
