Alex Johnson gave the Maryville women's soccer team an early lead and then the Saints defense took over to defeat McKendree 2-0 Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Maryville Field.
What Happened – Johnson started the Saints off in the right direction in the fourth minute as she took a crossing pass from
Allison Verville and found the back of net from 7-yards out to give Maryville an early 1-0 lead. The game turned into a defensive battle as the Bearcats held a 3-2 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes of play. The Saints extended the lead in the 59
th minute as
Stacie Muehling headed in a rebound off the goalkeeper from 3-yards out to give Maryville a 2-0 advantage.
Inside the Numbers – The Bearcats held an 8-3 advantage in shots with each team putting three shots on frame. The goal for Johnson was her team-high sixth of the year while Muehling scored her fourth of the season.
Elyse Waterhouse made three saves to earn her fourth win of the year and her second clean sheet this season.
