St. Louis – The Maryville men's soccer team needed to work overtime and then some as
Christian Kjaersgaard and
Zulfikar Karimi made outstanding plays as the Saints defeated Indianapolis 5-3 in a shootout Sunday afternoon at Maryville Field in the First Round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Soccer Championships.
What Happened – The fifth-seeded Greyhounds opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as they scored off a cross from 19-yards out to take a 1-0 lead, but the Saints answered eight minutes later.
Diego Coy took a pass from
Gavino Carranza and hit a strike into the upper right corner of the goal to even the match at 1-1. The game turned into a defensive battle for the remainder of regulation and the two overtime periods as the Saints held a slim 6-5 edge in shots over the last 80 minutes. In the shootout, each team converted their first three shots.
Diego Coy put the Saints ahead as he slid a shoot past the keeper on the left side. On the Greyhounds fourth kick, Kjaersgaard made a diving save to keep Maryville ahead. Karimi sent the Saints home a winner as he lifted a chip over the goalkeeper's head to propel Maryville to the conference semifinals for the first time since joining the league.
Inside the Numbers – The No. 4 seed Saints were outshot 12-8 on the afternoon with only four shots being on frame. Coy paced the Maryville attack with three shots. The goal for Coy was his second of the season.
