Diego Coy scored late in the match to propel the No.4 seed Maryville University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over No. 8 seed Rockhurst in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Soccer Championships semifinal Friday afternoon at the Woehrle Athletic Complex in Jeffersonville, Ind. The Saints move on the conference championship game for the first time since joining the league.
What Happened – The two teams battled to a scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes as the Saints controlled the pace of play by holding a 7-3 advantage in shots. Maryville had plenty of opportunities in the half, including a blast from
Pontus Gitselov that skipped off the top of the crossbar. The score remained tied until the 81st minute as Coy drilled a free kick into the upper right corner of the goal from 19-yards out to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. The Hawks had an opportunity to even the match in the 87
th minute with a shot from the left wing, but
Christian Kjaersgaard made a huge save to help preserve the Maryville victory.
Inside the Numbers – The Saints ended the match with a 12-10 advantage in shots with four of those being on frame. The goal for Coy was his third of the season and second on a free kick. Kjaersgaard was credited with three saves on the afternoon to earn his eighth clean sheet of the season.
