Zulfikar Karimi scored a goal in each half of action to pace the Maryville men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over the University of Indianapolis Friday afternoon at Maryville Field. The win for the Saints was their fifth straight victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
What Happened – Karimi gave the Saints an early lead in the 18
th minute as he took a crossing pass from
JD Sohn and bounced a shot from 7-yards out off the post and into the goal as Maryville grabbed a 1-0 lead. The Greyhounds tied the game in the 30
th minute with a goal from 14-yards out on the left wing to make the score 1-1. The Saints regained the lead in the 37
thminute as
Cameron Paton took a pass from
Ben Brodie and slid it pass the keeper to give Maryville a 2-1 advantage. Karimi extend the lead to 3-1 in the 57
th minute as he converted a penalty kick into a goal. UIndy pulled to within a score in the 80
th minute, but the Saints defense did not allow another shot the rest of the way to secure the win.
Inside the Numbers – The goals for Karimi were his second and third of the year while Paton tallied his first of the season. The Greyhounds outshot Maryville 8-6 in the contest.
Christian Kjaersgaard was credited with three on the afternoon en route to earning his sixth win of the year.
