Playing in Kansas City's historic Municipal Auditorium, the Maryville men's basketball team had its season-opening three-game winning streak snapped 71-66 Pittsburg State. The Saints were down by 10 but rallied to take the lead before the Gorillas hit a key 3-pointer in the final seconds.
What Happened
The Saints held an advantage for most of the first half, built it to as much as eight, and took a 32-28 lead into the break. The Gorillas cut into the Maryville edge and eventually inched ahead 37-36 four minutes into the second half. Pittsburg State used consecutive 3-pointers to build its biggest advantage of the night at 57-47 midway through the second half. The Saints answered with their best run of the night with 12 straight points. Bobby Harvey started the run with a 3-pointer, and the Saints converted three free throws. Robin Thompson sank a jumper, and his layup tied the game. Eugene Jones' bucket pushed the Saints ahead 59-57 with 5:56 to play.
Pitt State went ahead on a 3-point play but Chaz Glotta tied the game with a 3-pointer and then splashed in another while getting fouled. His free throw completed a four-point play for a 66-62 edge at the 1:40 mark. The Gorillas tied the game at 66-all and went ahead on a 3-pointer with 16 seconds to go. The Saints had a shot to tie the game but could not find the mark.
