Newman Holds Off Saints Women's Basketball Comeback

In the first game at the Parrish Hotels Thanksgiving Classic, the Maryville women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak ended 80-73 by Newman. The games are being hosted by Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.

What Happened
Newman scored the first five points of the game to grab the early momentum. UU Longs got the Saints on the board but Newman stretched the lead out to 10-2. Baskets by Kayla Steward and Jayda Jansen pulled the Saints to within seven. In the second quarter, the Saints trimmed the deficit to 35-30 after a Jansen three-point play. Newman took a 48-36 lead into halftime.

The Saints still trailed 60-46 before closing the third with a rush. Longs scored on a layup, and Hunter Stidham sank a 3-pointer and a layup to bring Maryville to within 60-53. After a Newman score, Stidham hit another triple to pull chop the lead down to 62-56. In the first minute of the fourth, Stidham completed a 3-point play as the Newman lead stood at 66-59. Katie Diakhaby scored inside on consecutive possessions, and a Stephanie Sherwood free throw brought the Saints to 70-64 with 6:15 to play. Longs pulled Maryville to 72-67 with a 3-pointer. A triple by Mary Barton with 35 seconds remaining trimmed the deficit to 76-72 but the Saints could not get the lead down to one possession as Newman held on.
