Oklahoma Christian's Aubrey Johnson scored on a rebound and a layup at the buzzer to hand the Maryville men's basketball team a 72-70 defeat in Edmond, Okla., Monday afternoon. The loss spoiled an 18-point outing by Casey Teson, who led four Saints in double figures. The Saints hit nine 3-pointers and shot 56.3 percent from deep while also connecting on 17-of-19 free throws (89.5 percent).
 
What Happened
The Saints grabbed the lead from the outset by sinking their first five 3-pointers. Dezmond McDaniel opened the game with a triple, and after a layup by Jerome Davis, McDaniel sank another from deep. Yet another 3-pointer by Chaz Glotta boosted the Saints to an 11-3 lead just 2:07 into the game. A Robin Thompson free throw stretched the advantage to double digits at 20-10. Later, back-to-back 3-pointers by Glotta and Teson handed Maryville a 28-14 cushion midway through the first half. The Saints were up 33-25 before tacking on a 7-0 run, fueled by five made free throws. Teson hit a runner at the halftime buzzer as Maryville took a 47-31. The Saints made eight of 10 3-pointers and shot 51.7 percent in the first 20 minutes.
 
In the second half, the Maryville margin was still 51-39 but the Eagles went on a 13-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 52-51 with 9:48 to go. McDaniel scored to push the Saints back ahead but the teams traded the lead seven times. OCU edged ahead 66-61 with 1:58 remaining before the Saints stormed back. Glotta drained a 3-pointer, and two free throws by Eugene Jones tied the game 66-66. The Eagles hit a 3-pointer but Teson pulled two points back on free throws. OCU made one free throw for a 70-68 lead but Teson sank a jumper to tie the game at 70-all with 11 seconds to play before the Eagles won the game at the buzzer.
 
Oklahoma Christian took advantage of 20 offensive rebounds and turned those second chances into 21 points. The Saints turned the ball over just eight times. Glotta finished with 13 points, and Davis made all eight of his free throws en route to 12 points. McDaniel finished with 10 points.
