Joplin, Mo. – The Maryville University baseball team could not recover from a four -run inning early in the contest as the Saints fell to Missouri Southern 7-5 Sunday afternoon at Turner Field in Joplin, Mo.
Game One:
After the Lions plated a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, the Saints struck back in the third as
Drake Lubin lifted a deep fly ball over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1. Maryville grabbed the lead as
Dalton Schumer scored on a Zach Ruckman single to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage. Missouri Southern responded in the home half of the third with four runs and then scratched across two more runs in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. The Saints bounced back with a pair of runs in the fifth as
Daniel Covert walked and moved to third on a Schumer double to put runners at second and third. Ruckman then stepped in a delivered a single to score both runners and cut the Lions lead to 7-4. Schumer hit his second homer of the year in the ninth, but that is as close as the Saints could get.
