Maryville University announced that it will add a competitive men's club ice hockey team for the 2018-19 academic year. St. Louis native John Hogan has been named head coach for the team.
The Saints will compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) in Division II. The Saints will play their first season at the Affton Ice Rink. Maryville will have participation awards available for potential student-athletes interested in playing.
"I am thrilled and honored to be the first head coach of the men's club ice hockey team," Hogan said. "I look forward to building a competitive program that continues the winning tradition of Saints athletics. I would like to thank Dr. Mark Lombardi for seeing ice hockey as an integral part of the Maryville experience as we continue to grow as an athletic department and university."
Prior to becoming the head coach at Maryville University, Hogan was an assistant coach under Chad Berman with the University of Arizona's ACHA D1 team. Hogan's coaching duties focused on player development and running the defensive core.
Hogan played three years for the Arizona D1 program before joining the coaching staff. As players, Hogan and his twin brother, Toppie, were instrumental in leading their team to the 2016 National Tournament. Hogan scored the game-winning goal to capture the Wildcats' first tournament win in more than 13 years.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Hogan attended Chaminade College Prep. In May 2018, he will obtain his master's in finance from the University of Arizona's Eller Business School and start working for his family company, Hogan Transportation. Hogan plans to build a perennially-competitive ACHA program at Maryville. After the program's first season, Maryville will compete for an ACHA DII National Championship. As the team's success and talent grows in the coming years, the University will consider moving the program into the NCAA Division I ranks.
