St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team fell behind early in both games of a doubleheader against Bellarmine and could not battle back as the Knights swept the Saints in a brief two-game series at Weber Field Saturday afternoon. The Knights jumped out to an 11-0 lead en route to a 14-6 win in game one and then limited the Saints to five hits in the second game of the day to sweep the series with an 13-2 win.
Game One:
After the Knights scored three runs in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead, they proceeded to score three more runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 11 -0 lead. The Saints showed some life in the seventh inning as
Austin Tapella drew a walk and moved to second after
Tyler Catlett was hit by a pitch. Tapella scored as
Drake Lubin singled through the left side to make the score 11-1.
Dalton Schumer stepped in and lifted a three-run blast to left center to cut the Knight lead to 11-4. Maryville added a run in the eighth inning as
Connor Markell launched a solo shot down the right field line to put the score at 11-5. Bellarmine added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to 14-5, but the Schumer drove in another run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 14-6.

Game Two:
The Knights used the long ball in the top of the first inning as Bellarmine scored four runs in the frame, with three coming on a home run to right field. Maryville answered with a run of their own in the home half of the frame as Lubin reached base on a bunt single and moved to second on a stolen base. Lubin scored on a Schumer single to cut the Knights lead to 4-1. After Bellarmine hit a two-run homer in the top of the second,
Cody Klotz drilled a homer of his own to right center to put the score at 6-2. That is as close as Maryville would get as Bellarmine closed out the game by scoring seven runs over the next five innings to earn the double header sweep.
