St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team received an outstanding pitching performance from senior
Alec Harris in the nightcap to salvage a split with the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday afternoon at Weber Field. The Saints saw a late inning rally fall short as the Tritons won the opener 16-15, but Harris earned the complete game victory in the second game of the day, 4-2.
Game One:
After a scoreless first frame, the Tritons scratched out a run in the top of the second to take an early 1-0 lead. The Saints answered in their half of the inning as
Dalton Schumer started the uprising with a lead-off double and scored on a
Garrett Taylor to tie the contest at 1-1. After a pair of walks, Maryville gained the lead as
Daniel Covert ripped a double to center filed to clear the bases and give the Saints a 3-1 lead. Maryville continued to add runs as
Brennan Williams launched a two-run blast to give the Saints a 6-1 advantage. Maryville hung another crooked number in the third as the Saints added six runs to take a 12-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a
Dalton Schumer solo shot and a Williams two-run double. The Tritons scored six runs of their own in the fourth and added a pair of runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 12-9. The Saints extended the lead in the fifth as Covert reached base on an error and scored on a
Cody Klotz single up the middle. The Tritons regained the lead with five runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth to grab a 16-13 lead. Schumer hit his second homer of the game with Williams on to cut the UMSL advantage to 16-15 in the home half of the eighth, but that is as close as the Saints could get.

Game Two:
The Saints started the scoring in the home half of the first inning as
Zack Ruckman hit a bases-loaded single to score Williams from third as it gave Maryville a 1-0 lead. The Saints added a run in the second as Williams lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Klotz as the lead was extended to 2-0. The Tritons cut into the lead with a run in the top of the third stanza, but Conner Markell got the run back on one swing as he smacked his fifth home run of the year to give Maryville a 3-1 advantage. UMSL narrowed the gap once again with a run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Saints responded with an insurance run in the sixth. Klotz drilled a one-out triple to center field and crossed the plate on a fielder's choice to give Maryville a 4-2 lead. Harris gave up five hits and struck out eight batters en route to his team-high seventh win of the year.
