Normandy, Mo. –
Louis Niemerg tossed a five-hitter to pace the Maryville baseball team as the Saints defeated Missouri-St. Louis, 8-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Sunday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The second game of the twin bill was suspended due to unplayable field conditions.
Game One:
The Saints got things going in the first inning as
Cody Klotz hit a two-out single up the middle and scored on a
Dalton Schumer double to give Maryville an early 1-0 lead. The Saints added to the lead in the second as
Drake Lubin drilled a two-run double to left center that gave Maryville a 3-0 advantage.
Camdon Mercier broke the game open in the top of the fifth with a three-run blast to extend the lead to 6-0, but the Saints were not done yet as
Tyler Catlett has hit by a pitch and moved over to third on a throwing error. Catlett scored on a wild pitch to give Maryville a 7-0 lead. The Tritons had a chance to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as UMSL loaded the bases, but
Louis Niemerg got a strike out to end the uprising.
Daniel Covert added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a solo shot to extend the lead to 8-0. The Tritons pushed across a pair of runs in the seventh, but Niemerg slammed the door shut to earn the complete game victory.

The second game of the day was suspended due to unplayable field conditions with two outs in the bottom of the second inning.
