Niemerg Paces Saints in Win over UMSL

Normandy, Mo. – Louis Niemerg tossed a five-hitter to pace the Maryville baseball team as the Saints defeated Missouri-St. Louis, 8-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Sunday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The second game of the twin bill was suspended due to unplayable field conditions.

Game One:
The Saints got things going in the first inning as Cody Klotz hit a two-out single up the middle and scored on a Dalton Schumer double to give Maryville an early 1-0 lead. The Saints added to the lead in the second as Drake Lubin drilled a two-run double to left center that gave Maryville a 3-0 advantage. Camdon Mercier broke the game open in the top of the fifth with a three-run blast to extend the lead to 6-0, but the Saints were not done yet as Tyler Catlett has hit by a pitch and moved over to third on a throwing error. Catlett scored on a wild pitch to give Maryville a 7-0 lead. The Tritons had a chance to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as UMSL loaded the bases, but Louis Niemerg got a strike out to end the uprising. Daniel Covert added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a solo shot to extend the lead to 8-0. The Tritons pushed across a pair of runs in the seventh, but Niemerg slammed the door shut to earn the complete game victory.
