Brennan Williams launched a pair of home runs as the Maryville baseball team pounded out 13 hits to upend the University of Missouri-St. Louis 12-2 Monday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. With the victory, the Saints have won six of its last seven games and improve to 11-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Game One:
After the game re-started in the bottom of the second inning with a Triton on third base and two-outs,
Arcentae Stone got out of the inning by forcing a ground-out to keep the game scoreless. Williams jump started the Maryville offense with a two-run blast to give Maryville an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third stanza. UMSL answered with runs in the home half of the third and the fourth to even the score at 2-2. The Saints took control of the contest in the top of the fifth as Williams drilled his second two-run shot of the game to put Maryville out front 4-2. The offense continued to roll in the seventh as
Cody Klotz opened the inning with a single and moved to third on a Triton miscue. He scored as
Drake Lubin singled to right to stake the Saints to a 5-2 advantage. After a pair of singles and a hit batter loaded the bases,
Connor Markell hit a single to center field that scored two runs and extended the lead to 7-2. Maryville pushed across another run on a wild pitch to take an 8-2 lead after seven innings. Klotz continued to swing a hot bat in the eighth inning as he lifted his fifth homer of the year down the right field line to give the Saints a 9-2 advantage. After Maryville loaded the bases for the second consecutive inning in the eighth, Markell smashed a ground rule double to plate two more runs that extended the lead to 11-2. The Saints tallied another run in the inning to push the lead to 12-2.
