For the first time, the Maryville men's golf team advanced to the medal/match play portion of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship. The No. 2 Saints beat defending champion No. 3 Bellarmine 4-1 but lost in the finals to top-seed Indianapolis 4-1/2 to 1/2. The tournament was hosted at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
In the semifinals against Bellarmine that started on hole 10, the Saints advanced to the finals with a 4-1 victory. In the first match out, Conrad Maloney was down two after six holes but drew even by the 11th hole of play. Down one with three to play, he won the 16th hole by one shot to draw level. After matching scores on the penultimate hole, Maloney parred the final hole to emerge with a one-shot victory. Keenan Flemming won the first two holes and pushed his edge to three by the turn. He led by as many as four and eased to the victory by three shots.
At the No. 3 match, Joey Williams was in a close match the entire way. He was tied with three holes to play but won the 16th hole by one stroke. The match was tied on the next hole before Williams won the 18th hole by two shots for the victory. Jake Newman was in the fourth slot and found himself tied after seven holes. He won three straight holes by one shot to grab the advantage and cruised to a four-stroke victory. In the anchor match, Alex Locke halved the first hole but lost the next two and never was able to pull even again as Bellarmine won its only match of the day.
Taking on the top-seeded Greyhounds, Maloney was the first match out. He fell behind by four shots at the turn but trimmed the deficit in half at the 10th hole. Maloney got to within one on 13 and 14 but lost shots on holes 15 and 16 to Oliver Mast. Locke was in match No. 2 and dropped one stroke on the opening hole. After playing the second on even terms, he lost two shots on three and never was able to pull back against Ian Carroll.
Flemming was all square after three holes but dropped two shots versus Spencer Klimek. He was down four strokes after 11 but made up three on the 12th hole to tighten up the match. Flemming grabbed the lead by one on the 15th hole as he carded a three while his opponent posted a five for a two-shot swing. However, he ended his match in a draw. Jake Newman was on even terms through the fourth hole before dropping one shot back against Erik Edwards. He pulled back to all square on seven and took a two-shot lead on the next hole. However, he lost shots on the next two holes to fall behind. Newman drew to within two shots on the final hole but was not able to force a tie.
Williams faced GLVC Tournament medalist Graham McAree in the anchor match. Williams lost a stroke on the second hole but got it right back on the next hole. He again fell behind by one shot but was back to all square after seven holes. McAree went two shots ahead on the eighth hole and did not let Williams any closer and held on the win.
The Saints look to garner a bid to the 2018 NCAA Regionals which will be hosted in Findlay, Ohio, May 7-9.
