St. Louis – The Maryville University men's soccer team grabbed an early lead, but failed to hold on as the Saints earned a 3-3 draw with Davenport University Thursday evening at Maryville Field.
What Happened – The Saints opened the scoring in the 6
th minute as
Helmut Florencia placed a corner kick from
Dom Riggio into the lower left side of the goal to give Maryville a 1-0 lead. The Panthers tied the match in the 34
th minute, but
Cedric Sengl took a centering pass from
JD Sohn and scored from 11-yards out as the Saints re-gained the lead 2-1 in the 35
th minute. Davenport answered in the 55
th minute to knot the game up at 2-2, but Maryville answered in the 61
st minute as
Pontus Gitselov tallied off a centering pass from
Rasmus Tauts as the Saints once again took the lead at 3-2. The Panthers responded with a goal three minutes later to once again draw the match even at 3-3. The game turned into a defensive battle as neither team was able to score over the next 56 minutes.
Inside the Numbers – Maryville outshot the Panthers 15-13 in the match. Each team had four shots on goal. Florencia paced the Saints with four shots while Tauts added three.
