The Maryville women's basketball team recorded a season sweep of McKendree Thursday in Lebanon, Ill., with a 76-67 win. Mary Barton led four Saints in double figures with 22 points and added six rebounds, while Kayla Steward added 15 points. Abby Monis chipped in 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Stephanie Sherwood also finished with 13 points.
 
What Happened
The Saints grabbed the early lead with 3-pointers by Sherwood and Barton. The Saints went up 13-8 after jumpers by Monis and UU Longs and eventually led 19-16 after the first 10 minutes. Early in the second, McKendree closed to 21-20 before the Saints embarked on an 11-0 run. Taylor Kirby started the run with a layup, and Barton added two free throws. After a Steward bucket and two at the line by Barton, Erin Lenahan capped the burst with a 3-pointer from the left wing. The Saints defense forced three misses and two turnovers for the 32-20 lead. The Saints stretched the margin to 16 and that was the margin at halftime with at 41-25 score.
 
The Saints kept a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter and led 54-40 going into the last 10 minutes. Maryville took its biggest lead of the night at 72-55 on a Mary Barton 3-pointer with 2:09 left in the game. McKendree made a late push, fueled by a five-point sequence but the Saints converted four free throws in the waning seconds to clinch the win.
