Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight GLVC Game with 80-66 Triumph at UIS

Kayla Steward scored 21 points and Abby Monis notched her second double-double of the year with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead Maryville to an 80-66 triumph at Illinois Springfield Saturday. Mary Barton was second on the team with 18 points, and Jayda Jansen chipped in a season-best 13 points. The Saints held UIS to just 28 percent shooting and have won three straight league games.

What Happened
The Saints trailed 47-46 midway through the third quarter before surging ahead. Stephanie Sherwood scored on a driving layup to put Maryville up by one. Her hoop ignited a 10-0 run. Jayda Jansen sank two free throws, and Kayla Steward scored two straight buckets. Erin Lenahan converted in the lane for a 56-47 lead at the 1:35 mark of the quarter to cap the burst.

UIS scored the first basket of the fourth quarter and cut the Maryville cushion down to 58-53. Jansen drilled a 3-pointer to give the Saints a more comfortable margin. Barton sank four straight charity tosses, and Sherwood's long 3-pointer gave the Saints a 68-54 lead with six minutes to play. Lenahan's layup with 3:34 remaining sealed the win as the Maryville lead grew to as much as 19 in the waning minutes.
