The Maryville men's basketball team rallied from a 12-point deficit and had a tip shot at the buzzer to force overtime but Quincy held on to beat the Saints 73-71 Thursday night in Quincy, Ill. The defeat spoiled 22 points from Casey Teson and a season-high tying 20 points by Zach Colletta.
What Happened
Early in the second half, Teson scored a basket to pull the Saints to within 41-40 before the Hawks scored 11 straight points. Quincy took its biggest lead of the night at 54-42 before Maryville mounted a big rally. The deficit stood at 11 before Colletta knocked down a 3-pointer to start a 10-0 run. Teson made a jumper and added a triple. Dezmond McDaniel's jumper pulled the Saints to 55-54 with 9:34 left to play. The Saints came all the way back and took the lead when Teson splashed in a 3-pointer for a 60-59 advantage with 7:24 remaining.
Quincy retook the lead before Colletta tallied five straight points to push the Saints back up 65-62. Two Teson free throws extended the Maryville margin to 67-62, the largest of the second half, with 5:37 left. The Hawks tied the game at 69-69 but Colletta hit a jumper for a 71-69 edge. However, the Hawks tied the game on the next possession and went ahead 73-71 with 1:37 to play. Maryville missed on its next two shots but had a tip shot at the buzzer that misfired that would have forced overtime.
