Casey Teson poured in a career-high 38 points and Chaz Glotta sank a crucial 3-pointer in the final minute as the Maryville men's basketball team scored the final seven points to defeat Truman State 85-78. Glotta finished with 18 points and nailed five 3-pointers. Teson's total is tied for the most in the Division II era and tied for the fifth highest in program history.
What Happened
Maryville took an early lead as Casey Teson's bucket built a 7-4 edge. Truman rallied and jumped ahead with 12 unanswered points. The Saints were down nine but used a quick 6-0 run to get back into the game. Chaz Glotta drilled a 3-pointer and was fouled on another triple. He sank all three at the line to pull the Saints to 23-20. Truman rebuilt a nine-point advantage but the Saints rallied again. Bobby Harvey knocked down a 3-pointer, and Jerome Davis converted a three-point play. Teson made a layup to trim the deficit to 35-34 with 1:44 left before the break. Truman took a 39-36 lead into the break.
The Saints again faced a nine-point margin but got hot from beyond the arc. The Saints used an 11-0 run to surge ahead. Two 3-pointers by Dezmond McDaniel and Chaz Glotta brought them back to one possession, and a third triple by Glotta tied the game at 53-53. Teson's bucket pushed the Saints ahead 55-53 at the 12:14 mark. Another Teson score built Maryville's margin to 59-55. The teams traded the lead three times before TSU edged out to a three-point lead.
Teson sank two at the stripe for a 69-68 lead. Truman answered to reclaim the lead but Jerome Davis replied with a layup to hand the Saints a 71-70 with 3:56 remaining. TSU scored on its next possession before Teson hit a jumper, was fouled and hit the free throw for a 74-72 lead. Two Truman free throws forced another tie but Teson answered again for a 76-74 edge. The game was still tied at 78-78 until Chaz Glotta drained a 3-pointer for an 81-78 lead with 45 ticks left to play. TSU nearly tied the game but Teson sank two free throws for an 83-78 edge. Maryville's defense forced a turnover, and Eugene Jones knocked down two free throws with 22 second left to ice the game.
The Saints shot 69.2 percent from 3-point range (9-of-13), the second best mark in school history. Maryville also took advantage at the line by converting 20 of 23 chances. Davis added 10 points, while McDaniel handed out six assists.
