Missouri-St. Louis recap
Despite a game-high 24 points from
Casey Teson, the Maryville men's basketball team lost a 70-64 decision at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Saints came back and took the lead as late as with six minutes to play but the Tritons used a pivotal 9-0 run to take the battle between the city rivals.
Â
What Happened
The Saints grabbed the early lead 4-0 after buckets by
Zach Colletta and
Jerome Davis. The Tritons answered with 12 straight to jump ahead.
Robin Thompson made a layup to end the UMSL run. The home side built their biggest lead at 24-13 before the Saints answered with a 13-3 burst. Colletta started the run with a jumper, and
Bobby Harvey drilled a 3-pointer. After one Thompson free throw, UMSL scored but Colletta and Teson tallied baskets. A Colletta three-point play brought the Saints to 27-26 but UMSL took a 32-28 lead at halftime.
Â
The Tritons eventually pushed their cushion to 48-38 at the 11:38 mark before the Saints chipped away. Colletta and Thompson scored before
Chaz Glotta tallied a long 3-pointer. Teson scored on a drive down the lane, and
Jerome Davis grabbed an offensive rebound and his put back gave the Saints a 49-48 lead with 6:39 to play. UMSL retook the lead on a 3-pointer and built the edge back to 57-49. The Saints made another charge with a full-court press. Harvey had a steal and scored, and Teson splashed in a 3-pointer to get Maryville to within 59-56 at the 1:52 mark. UMSL answered with a triple but Teson and
Dezmond McDaniel notched back-to-back buckets to trim the deficit to 62-60 with 56 seconds left. However, the Tritons sank all six free throw attempts in the final 32 ticks to hold on for the victory.
Â
Coming off a DII-era tying 38 points, Teson had his 11th game of the season with at least 20 points. Colletta notched double figures in scoring for the fifth time in six games with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
