Mary Barton poured in 23 points, and Hunter Stidham had her second straight career-high with 19 points as the Maryville women's basketball team toppled No. 25 Truman State 85-78 in Kirksville, Mo. The win is the first for the Saints over a ranked team since defeating No. 19 Lewis Jan. 14, 2017. The victory runs the Maryville winning streak to five.
What Happened
The Saints hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter and grabbed the lead 21-18 after 10 minutes. The advantage stood at 25-22 before a Mary Barton bucket and a 3-pointer by Stephanie Sherwood pushed the Saints up to 30-22. Another score by Barton built a 37-27 lead at the 6:08 mark of the second quarter. Truman rallied and scored on a three-point play just before halftime to lead 44-42.
TSU scored the first six points of the third quarter to build a 50-42 lead. Barton drilled a 3-pointer to get the Saints started in the second half. Maryville used a 7-0 run, capped by Jayda Jansen's jumper, to close to 53-52. Stidham hit a triple and sank two free throws to push the Saints ahead 62-61 with 34 seconds left. TSU retook the lead but Stidham scored just before the third quarter buzzer to forge at 64-64 tie.
Sherwood sank a 3-pointer and two free throws by Jansen gave Maryville a 71-68 advantage with 7:21 remaining. The defenses took over for a stretch before Barton made a driving layup for a 73-68 lead at the 3:49 mark. Jansen splashed in a step-back jumper for a 77-73 lead with 1:22 left. TSU scored to trim the deficit to 77-75 and fouled Barton. Maryville's top shooter hit both free throws for a 79-75 lead with 35.7 ticks to play. The Saints defense forced a miss and Sherwood grabbed the defensive rebound. Barton converted two more at the line but Truman sank a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to trim Maryville's lead to 81-78. Barton sank two free throws, and after a TSU miss, Stidham iced the game with two charity tosses in the waning seconds.
Sherwood narrowly missed a double-double with 13 point and nine rebounds, while Jansen finished with 12 points.
