What Happened
The Saints were down double digits in the first half but cut the gap to one and trailed just 37-34 by halftime. Tiffin pushed the margin back to 55-45 with 12 minutes to play but the Saints charged back into the contest. The Dragons kept the edge until
Ross Ryan scored on a layup, and Long drilled a 3-pointer for Maryville's first lead of the game 64-63 with 4:24 remaining. The game was tight down the stretch. Long sank two free throws by 29 seconds left to play to give the Saints a 72-70 lead but Tiffin scored with 15 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Â
In the extra session, Williams sank one free throw, and
Kamto Eze had a layup. Long added two at the line for a 77-72 edge with 2:08 to go. Tiffin finally scored in OT but Long sank two straight free throws. The Maryville defense forced its second straight turnover, and Long sealed the victory with four at the charity line in the final 25 seconds.
Â
Long's 12-for-12 performance at the free-throw line matched the efforts by Henry Shannon who also made his dozen free throws in November 1997. The only better perfect free throw effort is Trae Pemberton's 15-of-15 night against Lindenwood Dec. 13, 2014.
Owen Long was second on the team with 13 points, while chipping in three rebounds, three steals and two assists.
