Dom Riggio scored early in the first overtime to lift the 17th-ranked Maryville men's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Illinois Springfield in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championships Sunday afternoon at Maryville Field.
What Happened – The sixth-seeded Prairie Stars opened the scoring in the 21
st minute with a shot that was deflected into the goal to grab a 1-0 lead. The game turned into a defensive battle until
Braden Johnson slotted a cross from
Helmut Florencia into the lower right corner of the goal in the 84
th minute to even the match at 1-1. Riggio capped off the comeback in the 93
rd minute as he took a corner kick from
Zulfikar Karimi and placed a header that found the back of the goal to send the third-seeded Saints to the conference semifinals for the second consecutive year.
Inside the Numbers – The goal for Johnson was his team-high 11
th of the season, and he is also tied for the conference lead in goals. Riggio now has two goals on the year, both of which have come off of corner kicks from Karimi.
