Men's Soccer Defeats Tiffin to Advance in the 2019 NCAA Division II Soccer Championships

St. Louis – Cameron Paton scored midway through the first half to propel the No. 3 seeded Maryville University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Tiffin University in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Division II Soccer Championships Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Saints advance to the third round of the tournament and take on Great Lakes Valley Conference foe No. 2 seeded Bellarmine.

What Happened – The two teams were locked in a defensive battle until Paton struck in the 30th minute. He took a cross from Ben Brodie and ripped a shot from 21-yards out into the left side of the goal to put Maryville on top 1-0.  Tiffin goalkeeper Dylan Morris kept Maryville at bay with a couple of tremendous saves in later stages of the first half. The sixth-seeded Dragons had an opportunity to tie in the 83rd minute, but Saints keeper Max Simonazzi made an outstanding save on a shot by Joel Daly to keep Tiffin off the scoreboard.

Inside the Numbers – Maryville held a 5-5 advantage in shots while placing five of those on frame. The shutout is the Saints 12th of the season, and Simonazzi picks up his fifth clean sheet of the year.

What Was Said - "We are proud of the performance of our guys against a tough and experienced Tiffin team," Maryville head coach David Korn said. "I thought we had a big impact with players off the bench which showed our depth. We had a great week of preparation. As the match got tight late, we were composed and more mature than we had been in previous matches. We are thrilled to keep moving forward in the NCAA Tournament."
