Victory! The Maryville volleyball team recorded its first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season with a sweep over Southwest Baptist. The Saints cruised to a 27-25, 25-17, 25-10 triumph, their first league sweep since Sept. 16, 2016, against Saint Joseph's. The Maryville defense held the Bearcats to just a .057 hitting percentage.
 
What Happened
Set one featured 17 ties and five lead changes as the Saints made a late push to win the opener. SBU led 24-23 but Faith Ahlhardt pounded down a kill for a tie. Allison Lakin followed with a kill but the Bearcats answered. Taylor Schellert tacked on a kill, and an SBU hitting error allowed the Saints the thrilling 27-25 win.
 
In the second set, Maryville was down 11-10 but a Cassidy Arndt kill ignited a 5-0 run. After an Elizabeth Eardly kill, Arndt had another kill. SBU committed an error, and a block by Schellert and Mikaela Kues built a 15-11 edge. The Bearcats closed to 20-17 but the Saints responded with five straight points to close out the set. Maryville forced three straight SBU hitting errors for the win.
 
The Saints dominated set three by hitting .317 while holding SBU to a -.069 mark. SBU was up 7-6 before the Saints reeled off seven consecutive points to jump ahead 13-7. The Bearcats called timeout but Maryville sealed the win with four straight points. Arndt finished with a double-double on 12 kills and 11 digs. Lakin added 10 kills and four blocks, while Eardly had a strong all-around match with four kills, five digs and six blocks. Kayla Buxton handed out 17 assists, while A.J. Hallemann led three Saints in double figure digs with 16. Kues also contributed six kills, 14 assists and eight digs.
