Upper Iowa recap
Abby Monis set a school record for rebounds in a game with 19 to lead Maryville to a 71-51 victory over Upper Iowa to close out the Subway Classic in Quincy, Ill. Lea Feasline set the previous mark of 18 boards Dec. 18, 2004, against Staten Island. Monis also had 16 points to record her second double-double in three games.
What Happened
Jayda Jansen scored two early baskets as the Saints grabbed a quick 6-0 lead. Maryville kept the lead for most of the first quarter but Upper Iowa slowly rallied to take a 19-16 edge after 10 minutes. Abby Monis controlled the glass and snared nine rebounds in the opening quarter.
Monis tied the game at 22-all and took the lead at 26-25. Mary Barton scored seven straight points to push the Saints ahead. Barton had a layup, drilled a 3-pointer and added a short jumper for a 31-25 lead. The Saints settled for a 32-30 edge at halftime.
Hunter Stidham's 3-pointer midway through the third quarter was good for a 40-34 advantage. Up by three, the Saints scored six straight points. Jayda Jansen hit two free throws, and consecutive layups by Monis and Barton built a 48-39 lead. Barton added a triple to start an 11-0 lead as Maryville took control. A steal and layup by Donnetta Colbert, followed by back-to-back 3-pointers by Jansen built a 61-43 cushion. Maryville's defense held Upper Iowa to just a 33.3 percent shooting mark.
