Hot-Shooting Walsh Defeats Maryville in Season Opener

Walsh recap
In its 2019-20 season opener, the Maryville men's basketball team traveled to Tiffin, Ohio, but was dealt an 87-63 defeat by Walsh in the first game of the GLVC-GMAC Crossover. The Cavaliers, who led by just five at half, were deadly from deep to create separation from the Saints. Owen Long led Maryville with 14 points, while Parker Long added 13 points, five assists and three steals.

What Happened
The Saints were down 11 points in the first half but consecutive 3-pointers by Dezmond McDaniel and Owen Long brought the deficit down to 20-15. Ohio native Ross Ryan scored in the lane, and McDaniel knocked down a jumper as the Saints pulled to within 21-19. A triple by Malik Barnett and a jumper in the lane by Ryan pushed the Saints up 24-23 with 6:40 left in the first half. Maryville was still leading 27-26 but Walsh rallied to grab a 40-35 lead by halftime.

Walsh began the second half on a 7-2 run but a jumper by Long cut the lead to 47-40. However, the Cavaliers went on a 10-0 burst to grab the double-digit advantage. Ross and Long scored on back-to-back trips as the Saints closed to 57-44 with 11 minutes to play. However, Maryville was unable to get the Walsh lead down to single digits the rest of the way. The Cavaliers were red-hot from 3-point range and hit 19 triples in the contest.
