Florencia Brace Carries Saints to a 2-1 Victory Over Bellarmine to Advance in the NCAA Tournament

Louisville, Ky. – Helmut Florencia scored two goals in a span of two minutes late in the contest to propel the No. 3 seeded Maryville men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Bellarmine Friday night in the NCAA Division II Super Region #3 semifinal at Frazier Stadium in Louisville, Ky. With the victory, the Saints advance to the NCAA Regional Final for the first time in school history.

What Happened – The teams played the first 45 minutes on even terms as the No. 2 seeded Knights held a 9-3 advantage in shots. Bellarmine had a golden opportunity to score in the 36th minute on a header, but Ricardo Andrade made a defensive save just in front of the goal to keep the Knights off the scoreboard. Maryville had an early chance to score in the 55th minute as Emil Antonacci had a shot blocked from six yards out, and Grady Schliepsiek took the rebound and placed a shot that just sailed over the crossbar. Bellarmine broke through in the 58th minute as Tomas Bernedo scored off a cross to put the Knights on top 1-0. The Saints answered in the 84th minute as Florencia drilled a shot from 18-yards out off a breakaway to even the match at 1-1. He then put Maryville on top for good 83 seconds later. Cedric Sengl started the game-winning sequence by stealing a pass and feeding Florencia on the right wing. Florencia pushed a shot from eight yards out past the goalkeeper to make the score 2-1.

Inside the Numbers – The Saints ended the match with 13 shots with Florencia pacing Maryville with four strikes. Max Simonazzi collected three saves on the night to earn his sixth victory of the season.

What was Said – "I am incredibly proud of our men today," Maryville head coach David Korn said. "We didn't play well for large portions of the game, and that's a testament to a very good Bellarmine team. I thought going down a goal, our players showed good character and leadership. They then took their chances late in the match and credit Florencia, Sengl, and our attacking players for showing great composure and poise to finish our chances late. We are excited to advance and will work to recover physically and grow from our performance today."
