The Maryville men's lacrosse team pushed No. 10 Colorado Mesa to the final horn as the Mavericks held on for an 8-7 win in the Saints home opener Thursday. The Saints rallied from a 5-2 deficit and forged a 7-7 tie before Colorado Mesa scored the game winner with seven minutes to play.

Lucas Shafer gave the Saints a 1-0 as he fired in a goal 1:12 into the game. UCM tied the score and built a 5-1 lead in the opening quarter.
Jayden Fraser pulled one goal back for Maryville at the 1:15 mark to get the Saints to 5-2. Shafer again had the early goal in the second, and Fraser tacked on his second score.
Ty Wenck pulled the Saints even at 5-5 as he took a feed from Shafer and scored at the 2:33 mark.

Coming out at halftime, UCM edged back ahead with the next two scores for a 7-5 advantage.
Jacob Allen scored midway through the third as Maryville inched to 7-6. Wenck found the back of the net as the Saints finally drew even with 3:21 in the quarter.

The Saints had three good shots early in the fourth but could not grab the lead. UCM tallied what would prove to be the game winner at the 7:04 mark just after a penalty on Maryville had expired. The Saints had two more scoring chances in the waning minutes but were unable to force overtime.

Shafer led the Saints with three points on two goals and an assist. Maryville caused 13 turnovers and won 10 of the 19 faceoffs. The Saints are next in action Sunday, Feb. 10, as they travel to face Wheeling Jesuit.
