Playing the No. 1 team in the nation for the first time in program history, the Maryville women's basketball was looking to upset Drury but the Lady Panthers used a big third quarter for a 105-57 win in Springfield, Mo. During the third quarter, senior Stephanie Sherwood scored the 1,000th point of her career, becoming the 11th Maryville player to reach the milestone.
What Happened
Sherwood rained in a 3-pointer to give the Saints an early 6-4 advantage. Drury used a 9-0 burst to surge ahead. Abby Monis scored to end the Maryville drought but Drury settled for a 30-18 lead after the first quarter. Drury pushed its edge out before buckets by Mary Barton and Hunter Stidham brought the margin to 38-22. Sherwood tried to keep the Saints close and finished the first half with 17 but Drury led 60-37 at the half.
However, the Saints were unable to mount a comeback in the third quarter as Drury outscored the Saints 23-6. With 3:33 left in the third quarter, Sherwood hit a jumper to reach the 1,000 point mark for her career.
The Saints shot 100 percent at the line and converted all seven of their free throws. However, the Lady Panthers shot a sizzling 60.9 percent from the field. Drury, which leads the nation in turnovers forced at 31 per game, caused the Saints to turn the ball over 26 times. Hailey Diestelkamp led Drury with 29 points and nine rebounds.
