Barton Ties Career High with 24 Points as Saints Rally to Beat Missouri S&T 71-65

Mary Barton tied her career high with 24 points as the Maryville women's basketball team rallied from a 19-point deficit to win at Missouri S&T 71-65. Stephanie Sherwood grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds to lead the defensive efforts. The comeback was the largest of the season for Maryville.
 
What Happened
The Saints had trouble getting their offense started as Missouri S&T jumped out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter. Still down 26-7 in the second quarter, the Saints roared back into the game with a 12-0 run. Stephanie Sherwood sparked the burst with a basket, and Erin Lenahan added two free throws and a jumper. Kayla Steward hit a basket and Mary Barton converted a layup. Steward sank two at the line to get the Saints to within 26-19. The Saints sank 4-of-5 shots while forcing Missouri S&T to misfire on all five attempts and commit three turnovers. Maryville closed the gap to 30-26 at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, Barton drilled a 3-pointer, and Kayla Steward's basket at the 9:27 mark gave the Saints their first lead of the day. The teams traded the lead and the Miners were up 37-36. Barton splashed another triple, and Hunter Stidham had a steal and a layup for a 41-37 edge. Burton added a basket, and Steward followed with two free throws. Stidham made one at the line for a 46-37 lead. Missouri S&T rallied to trim the Maryville lead to 49-48 heading into the fourth.
 
The Miners took their first lead in the final stanza at 58-57 but Lenahan answered for Maryville. Missouri S&T took its final lead of the game at 61-60 before Abby Monis powered up for a layup at the 3:43 mark. A Lenahan jumper was good. The Maryville lead was still 66-65 until Lenahan made one free throw, and Barton tacked on two more at the line. The Saints were still up 67-65 but Barton scored on a layup with 24 seconds left. The Saints defense made a stop and Jayda Jansen iced the game with two free throws in the final seconds.
