Saints Drop a Pair to Winona State

St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team dropped a pair of games to Winona State Friday afternoon at Weber Field to start a three-game series with the Warriors. The Saints saw Winona State rally in the ninth inning to win the series opener, 10-7. Maryville thensaw a late inning rally fall short as the Warriors won, 4-2.
 
Game One:
The Warriors opened the scoring in the second with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead, Maryville grabbed the lead in the third as Louis Niemerg ripped a two-run single to left center field to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage. Winona State answered with a run in the top of the fourth to knot the contest up at 2-2, but Maryville regained the lead in the home half of the inning as Dominic Connolly singled and moved to third on a double down the left field line by Jackson Burrell to put runners at second and third. Connolly scored on a fielding error and Burrell came acroos on a sacrifice fly to give the Saints a 4-2 lead. Maryville added a run on a Cody Klotz double to extend the lead to 5-2. The offense continued to roll in the fourth as Niemerg drove in two more runs with a double into the gap in left center to extend the Saints lead to 7-2. The Warrior scored a run in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth to cut the Maryville lead to 7-5 and then plated five runs in the ninth to take a 10-7 lead and earn the come from behind victory.

Game Two:
Winona State raced out to an early 4-0 lead with a pair of runs the third and fourth innings and limited the Saints to a single hit through five frames. The Saints cut into the lead in the sixth as Connolly hit a one out double and moved to third on a  Drake Lubin bunt. Niemerg drove in his fifth run of the day with a double to center field to get the Saints on the scoreboard at 4-1, while Klotz drove in Lubin with a sacrifice fly to cut the Warrior lead to 4-2. After the Saints put the Warriors down in order in the seventh, they had an opportunity in the home half of the inning with runners at first and second, but Winona State got a strike to end the game and earn the sweep.
