Evansville, Ind. – The Maryville University baseball team once again could not survive a late-inning comeback as Southern Indiana rallied for four runs to defeat the Saints 8-6 at USI Baseball Field Saturday evening in Evansville, Ind.
Game One:
The Screaming Eagles grabbed an early lead with a run in the first. The Saints answered in the second as
Derek Renner laced an RBI single to tie the contest at 1-1. Maryville added another run in the inning on a wild pitch and pushed across one more run as
Drake Lubin hit an RBI single to put the Saints on top 3-1. USI cut the deficit to 3-2 with a run in its half of the second and regained the lead with a pair of runs in the third to make the score 4-3.
Louis Niemerg tied the game again in the sixth with his 10
th home run of the year to make the score 4-4. Maryville took the lead in the seventh as Lubin and
Alex Hoff both scored on a fielding error by the Screaming Eagles to go ahead 6-4. Southern Indiana once again regained the advantage with three runs in the seventh on three hits and added an insurance run in the eighth to push the advantage to 8-6. USI held on for the win by retiring the final six Maryville batters to claim the series sweep.
